Using underwater swimming to improve swimmers ability to feel frontal resistance is a great kinestetic tool.
These drills are called ‘Spider-Man’ drills because they are a genre of drill that are all similar. If you had your swimmers swim freestyle underwater then it looks a bit weird. And feels weird. But it looks like Spider-Man climbing a wall. So when I first used this drill in a random act of ‘fun’, which I am compelled to do, I knew it was gold.
I have obviously swum underwater since I was a child, (think four year old going off three meter springboard), so I was aware of how swimming underwater feels like, but with a coaches hat on, I imagined what it had taught me. Underwater resistance is completely around your body so it is much harder to move through it than on the surface. Your body position has to be perfectly aligned to find the easiest way through the water. Ergo…correct position if you want to lower your head or adjust alignment.
So breaststroke under water became Spider-Man Breaststroke, underwater fly became Spider-Man Fly and the hardest, for those kids that can do anything; Spider-Man Backstroke.
Try them.

About Coach Gary
I competed in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul representing Canada and coached in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics for Great Britain. I have a degree in History and a minor degree in Psychology from University of Calgary. I have travelled extensively and have been very lucky to see so much of the world while representing Canada and Great Britain at swimming competitions. I am very proud of the fact that I coached a swimmer to become number one in the world in the fastest swimming race in 2002. I pride myself in my ability to find new and interesting ways to teach swimming. I am an accomplished artist specialising in sculpture, I have another blog called 'swimmingart' where I publish some of my swimming drawings. I have three young children; all boys. I have recently taken up painting and yoga....but not at the same time.
All of my writing is AI free. I make my own errors and am happy to do that. I am not perfect because being human is not perfect.

Great idea. I know intrisically that what you say is true. I wonder if we can find a cost effective air supply like scuba divers use for backup so we can do more of this spiderman or create other games down there. 🙂
