Today’s Racing

I had the opportunity to watch some of this weekends racing and what I saw made me quite proud of our team. The wave has started!

Just as a sample, the 50m free for girls was great. Our young girls swam well. Still learning the skills necessary to swim well. The older more experienced swimmers now are really beginning to perform not only in training but also racing.

I saw race after race: first place, first, first, first, second, second, both from outside lane, and a solid 1-2 in the final heat.

Starting the wave was Kardelan. She won her heat by a good margin and dropped 3.45 seconds! This only ranked her 15th but she was the biggest improver over all girls 50 free. So she was first overall in improvement.

We did back to back wins; the next heat won by Kayla, she swam beautifully into 32.68 to be top of her age by over a second. Her big brother will need to watch out soon!

After one heat off, Charlotte’s heat she won handily doing a 31 seconds for the first time, a pb by a good chunk of 2 seconds. The very next heat Cara won in a 31, obviously not to be outdone! Huge pb’s for both.

Then few heats without Stirling.

Then Ciara and Ellen in consecutive heats, both came second from lanes 1 & 2. Ellen under 30 for the first time and Ciara equalled her PB also going 29s like Ellen.

We again had a couple heats off, and in the final heat our team came first and second. Perry and Melissa at the top of the 16 and over age group. Melissa was almost 2 seconds ahead of the field looking to beat Assistant Coach Alison’s pb soon!

If the girls 50 meter freestyle is any way to measure our teams performance then we are all doing a good job. Parents, swimmers and coaches. Well done everybody. Thank you to the parents that officiated.

Note: if anyone wants to beat Assistant coach Gary’s pb in 200fly then first point of attack might be to enter the race! Just saying…

About Coach Gary

I competed in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul representing Canada and coached in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics for Great Britain. I have a degree in History and a minor degree in Psychology from University of Calgary. I have travelled extensively and have been very lucky to see so much of the world while representing Canada and Great Britain at swimming competitions. I am very proud of the fact that I coached a swimmer to become number one in the world in the fastest swimming race in 2002. I pride myself in my ability to find new and interesting ways to teach swimming. I am an accomplished artist specialising in sculpture, I have another blog called 'swimmingart' where I publish some of my swimming drawings. I have three young children; all boys. I have recently taken up painting and yoga....but not at the same time.
